Spring Rain Safety: How to Stay in Control on Wet Roads

Rain might seem harmless, but wet roads are responsible for thousands of accidents each year. As the weather warms, oils rise to the road’s surface, making the first few rainy days especially slippery. A few preventive steps can help your vehicle stay stable, even in heavy rain.

1. Check your tires for proper tread depth

Worn tires can’t grip wet roads. If your tread depth is below 3mm, water won’t channel properly and you risk hydroplaning. Visit Hanford’s for a quick tire inspection, we’ll check tread depth, tire pressure, and balance for maximum control.

2. Replace streaky wiper blades

After a long winter, wipers often leave streaks or chatter. Fresh blades improve visibility and prevent windshield scratches. Replace them every six months or at the first sign of wear.

3. Test your headlights and brake lights

Rainy days reduce visibility for everyone on the road. Make sure your lights are clean, bright, and properly aligned so you can see and be seen.

4. Slow down and increase following distance

Even with good tires, stopping distances increase on wet pavement. Leave extra space, about four seconds between you and the vehicle ahead and avoid cruise control when roads are slick.

5. Keep windows clear

Use your defrost setting and air conditioning to remove humidity and keep your windshield from fogging up.
